The authorities of Niger have increased the number of deaths to 330 and the number of injured to 383 as a result of the floods of the rainy season, which lasts from June to September, thus exceeding the numbers of 2022 – 190 dead and 200 injured – – and in 2023 –about 50 dead and 80 injured.
Around 1.17 million people have been left homeless, and almost 160,000 houses have been damaged, as reported by the Nigerien news agency ANP.
In addition, some 22,400 head of livestock and more than 25,600 tons of food have been lost. The most affected region is Maradi with 111 deaths, followed by Tahoua, which has reported 99 deaths.
At the end of August, the Nigerien transitional government announced the allocation of a budget of 12 billion CFA francs (18.3 million euros) to address the situation. Similarly, the leader of the military junta of Niger, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, gave instructions to reorganize the budget item and decided that the financing of the administration be guaranteed “essentially” with the State’s own resources “for reasons” related to the reaffirmation of its sovereignty.
