Death toll in Chad rises to 145 due to flooding following torrential rains

Aug. 29 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Floods caused by heavy torrential rains in Chad have left at least 145 dead since the start of the rainy season, which began more than two months ago, according to a report compiled by the United Nations, which warns that all 23 provinces of the country are affected.

In addition, 960,000 people have been affected and some 70,000 homes have been destroyed. Agriculture has been “seriously affected” in a country that declared a national emergency for food security at the beginning of the year, with 3.4 million people facing acute famine, said UN Secretary-General spokesman Stéphane Dujarric at a press conference.

Chadian authorities, together with UN agencies and humanitarian partners, have mobilised and distributed emergency aid, but floodwaters are hampering delivery. In fact, some affected areas are currently only accessible by canoe.
