Death toll from recent snow avalanches in Tajikistan rises to 15

The death toll from the snow avalanches registered on Wednesday near the capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe, has risen to 15, as confirmed by the Tajik Civil Defense, which has added that another twelve people have been hospitalized.

The main avalanche took place in the town of Jorog, where thirteen people died, “including two children of only two years.” Thus, Civil Defense has pointed out that it took place because of the heavy snowfall” in the area, before adding that four apartments have been “completely destroyed”.

On the other hand, it has indicated that during the day on Wednesday another person died due to an avalanche near the village of Sadvad, while two residents of Jaspo were trapped by another avalanche when they were going to the funeral of the latter victim.

“One of them has been rescued, but the second is still under denial. The search continues,” the agency specified through a statement on its website, while confirming another death from another avalanche on the highway that connects Dushanbe and Varzob.

Civil Defense has warned that “the danger of avalanches on mountain roads will continue until February 19”, while the president of Tajikistan, Emomali Rajmon, has asked the national and local authorities to take measures to “avoid further consequences”.
