The pro-Russian authorities in the Ukrainian region of Kherson have raised this Friday to eight the official death toll from the severe flooding this week caused by the partial destruction of the Kajovka dam, for which Moscow and Kiev have held each other responsible.

The governor appointed by Russia for Kherson, Vladimir Saldo, has insisted this Friday on Telegram on the alleged Ukrainian guilt, denouncing that 17 towns have already been flooded due to a rise in water level that, according to what he has declared, can last up to ten days. In some areas, it has reached 12 meters.

The pro-Russian authorities have confirmed the evacuation of more than 5,800 people in the areas under their control. Balance has also ensured that the drop in the level of the reservoir puts the water supply in the Ivanovo area at risk, where some 4,000 people live, for which reason emergency measures have been established.

Russia has accused Ukraine of destroying the dam with artillery shells, while for the Ukrainian side the only possible explanation lies in the placement of explosives in the infrastructure itself and, therefore, is the work of the forces that have occupied the area after the invasion of 2022.
