At least 99 people have died and 134 have been injured due to tropical cyclone ‘Freddy’ as it passed through Malawi, as reported in a report by the Ministry of Disaster Management, which has detailed that 16 people remain unaccounted for.
The authorities of the African country have detailed that more than 13,000 people have been displaced due to the heavy rains, and that almost 3,000 homes have been affected, as reported by the entity in a statement posted on the Facebook social network.
Meanwhile, NGOs and local authorities are facilitating the provision of relief assistance to affected and displaced households, with search and rescue operations led by the country’s Defense Force, Police Service and Navy.
Malawi has taken the brunt of one of the cyclones that has also affected other countries in the region such as Madagascar or Mozambique, and that has lasted the longest active in the southern hemisphere. In the case of Mozambique, it has made landfall twice. It has also caused damage and victims as it passes through islands of the Indian Ocean, especially in Madagascar.
