“Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” said Frederiksen, in an interview with TV 2 in which he urged respect for the wishes of the local population, even recognizing the legitimacy of independence claims. In this sense, he has also appealed to future collaboration with the United States, without entering into specific controversies about the role of Trump and his family.
Frederiksen’s words have coincided with the trip of Donald Trump Jr., who has spread images of his arrival at Nuuk airport on social networks. “Greenland is beautiful,” he proclaimed, while in statements to the journalists waiting for him he tried to downplay the political weight of his unexpected trip.
“My son, Donald Jr, and several representatives will visit some of the most magnificent areas” of Greenland, an “incredible place” that, according to Trump, “would reap enormous benefits” if it were one day part of the United States, as has exposed Truth Social on his network.
“We will protect it and value it in the face of a very hostile outside world. Let’s make Greenland great again!” added the Republican leader, applying to this territory the motto that has twice led him to victory in elections in the United States. .
Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede already warned last week that the island “is not for sale and never will be.” The territory enjoys broad autonomy from Denmark, despite the fact that key issues such as foreign and defense policy are controlled from Copenhagen.
