At least 66 people have died and 16 are missing due to the havoc caused by tropical cyclone ‘Freddy’ as it passed through Malawi, according to a preliminary count confirmed by the local Red Cross and which adds to the victims that the storm has already caused. in other countries of the region such as Madagascar or Mozambique.
The Malawi Red Cross has reported that the local government had registered as of Monday night (local time) a total of 66 fatalities and 93 injuries. Organization staff collaborate in search operations and care for the victims of this cyclone.
The local authorities had already warned that the situation could be serious and, as a precautionary measure, the Ministry of Education ordered the suspension of classes this Monday and Tuesday in the districts of the southern part of the country, the most affected by the storm.
Malawi has taken the brunt of one of the longest active cyclones in the southern hemisphere and which, in the case of Mozambique, has made two landfalls. It has also caused damage and victims as it passes through islands of the Indian Ocean, especially in Madagascar.
