MADRID Jan. 13 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has confirmed this Monday the participation of Cuba in the lawsuit against Israel presented by South Africa for an alleged crime of genocide in the Gaza Strip due to the war that began in October of last year in the Palestinian enclave that It now claims almost 46,600 victims and was unleashed after the attacks by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).
The Cuban Government already announced last June its intention to join the complaint and now the ICJ has officially given the ‘green light’ to the matter. The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, has celebrated that this step reaffirms Havana’s “unrestricted support” for the Palestinian population.
“Cuba joins as a third State to South Africa’s lawsuit against Israel for the genocide in Palestine. With the delivery of its brief to the ICJ, it reaffirms its unrestricted support for Palestine and condemns any policy that undermines its right to freedom and independence” , he has stated on his social networks.
Havana already defended its arguments in the summer to accuse Israel of having “flagrantly violated” the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide with its actions in the Gaza Strip, and stressed that the lawsuit aims to “stop atrocities against the Palestinian people.
For Cuba, genocide, apartheid, forced displacement and collective punishments “can have no place in today’s world, nor can they be tolerated by the international community.” “Justice and respect for the Charter of the United Nations and International Law must prevail,” Cuban diplomacy stressed then.
The complaint before the International Court of Justice was made by South Africa at the end of December 2023. Since then, several countries have joined the lawsuit, including Colombia and Mexico, while Spain also announced at the beginning of June its intention to join the cause.
