One of the best-selling SSDs with this format is the Crucial MX500an inexpensive and good value for money disc that is now has been found a buffer overflow vulnerability.
This type of vulnerability has been discovered by a user on the TechPowerUp forums. It has been registered as CVE-2024-42642 and consists of that ATA packets can be issued from a host to cause a buffer overflowand originate data leak of the unit. The last known firmware version, the M3CR046 which is the affected oneso if you have a disk with this version it would be advisable to update as soon as a new firmware is available.
For now Crucial has not released any statementand we understand that is working on a new version to remove this vulnerability. It is also not known if older firmware versions are affected for this vulnerability. If you have one of these drives with this firmware version, you should be on the lookout until Crucial launches a solution to this problem.
