MADRID 19 Nov. () –
The Prime Minister of Croatia, Andrzej Plenkovic, announced this Tuesday that the country’s presidential elections, scheduled for the end of the year, will actually be held on December 29, with a possible second round on January 12.
Plenkovic announced during a press conference his intention to propose this date to Parliament, where his party is the most voted force although without a majority, although the Chamber is expected to approve the proposal, according to the local press.
The country’s president, Zoran Milanovic, could run for a second term as a candidate backed by the Social Democratic Party (SDP). On the other hand, Plenkovic’s Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) is expected to present Dragan Primorac.
Polls place both leaders as the main favorites to advance to the second round. In the case of the acting president, they grant him around 38 percent of support, while they grant Primorac just over 23 percent.
This will be the third time in 2024 that Croatian citizens go to the polls after voting in the country’s parliamentary elections in April and just two months later, in June, in the European Parliament elections.
The presidential elections were close to having to be brought forward by force after Milanovic presented his candidacy for the parliamentary elections. The president assured that he would only resign from the Head of State if he managed to take over the Government.
