A court excluded the presidential candidate leading the polls in Guatemala, Carlos Pineda, from the electoral process for alleged irregularities during the assembly in which he was elected as a candidate for the Prosperidad Ciudadana party.
The Sixth Chamber of the Administrative Litigation Court ruled on Friday that the businessman’s candidacy be suspended after an appeal filed by the Cambio party, with which Pineda was initially going to participate in the elections.
The Cambio group belongs to the politician Manuel Baldizón, who served a sentence in the United States for laundering drug money.
“Electoral fraud is about to be consummated, we trust the honorable Constitutional Court to protect democracy,” public Pineda on Twitter.
In recent months, Pineda began to gain the attention of Guatemalans, which allowed her to rank first in the polls, ahead of former first lady Sandra Torres and Zury Ríos, daughter of the late dictator José Efraín Ríos Montt.
In the elections to be held on June 25, Guatemalans are called to the polls to elect a president, vice president, representatives to Congress, municipal mayors, and representatives to the Central American Parliament.
