In a meeting with the Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Food Security of the United Arab Emirates, Mariam Almheiri, the Foreign Minister of Costa Rica, Arnoldo André, reaffirmed the Latin American country’s commitment to environmental causes, such as the protection of mangroves and the ocean.
At the meeting, Minister André delivered a letter signed by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Franz Tattenbach, expressing Costa Rica’s support for the Mangrove Climate Alliance: a joint initiative between the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.
The previous week Costa Rica hosted the celebration of World Wetlands Day. One of the main ecosystems under this category are mangroves.

During the meeting, Foreign Minister André also reaffirmed the country’s interest in eliminating single-use plastics, and especially in protecting the ocean, a task that he has led with France, a nation with which he will co-organize the Third United Nations Conference by the Ocean, which will take place in 2025.
On the other hand, the minister told the Emirati chief Costa Rica’s support for COP28 to be held in Dubai in November of this year.
“Costa Rica has a deep commitment to blue diplomacy. The protection of our ocean is a vital issue and we will continue to develop joint actions from our bilateral and multilateral action to protect marine ecosystems”, said Foreign Minister André.
In addition, the minister pointed to Costa Rica’s interest in having the Emirates Ministry of the Environment visit the country with the purpose of drawing up more common actions in favor of food security and the fight against climate change.
