Communications UACh.- On behalf of the UACh, he shared the experience of academic scientific dissemination that is developed through the PAR Explora Los Lagos.
The Academic Scientific Extension Coordinator of the Puerto Montt Headquarters of the Austral University of Chile (UACh)Gabriela Navarro Manzanal -who directs the Associative Project (PAR) Explore The Lakes of the Ministry of Technology Knowledge and Innovation executed by the UACh-, was invited to the 18th edition of the RedPOP 2023 Congress, which took place from July 10 to 16 at the Fiocruz Museum of Life, located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The event had the objective of showing the importance of different cultures, perspectives and contexts that add to the diversity of the field of popularization and dissemination of science in Latin America and in the rest of the world. Therefore, this year’s theme was “diverse voices: dialogue between knowledge and inclusion in the popularization of science”. This international exchange event was attended mostly by educators, journalists, artists, museologists and artists.
In this context, the ecologist and landscape designer by profession shared on July 11, through an exhibition, the work carried out by the PAR Explore The Lakeswhich is executed by the house of studies and which began its second version with the UACh seal in March.
On the occasion, Navarro highlighted that “we are a multidisciplinary team that seeks our identity as executors to be the promotion and strengthening of a scientific and technological culture in educational establishments and in the community in general.”
The professional added that “we have proposed to promote scientific and technological culture among the educational community of the region and the population in general, through the establishment of identity links between the development of science and technology and cultural heritage and native to this part of the country. We work to give a sense of belonging and environmental relevance and to strengthen the critical and reflective thinking of the inhabitants of southern Chile”.
In this regard, Gabriela Navarro recalled that in the previous version carried out in Panama, she was able to share the results of a CORFO project of Regional Strategic Public Good for Competitiveness, executed by the UACh Puerto Montt Headquarters, “through which it was created with the community of Chiloé archipelago with the Chiloé Wetlands Table, an interactive platform for technical support for territorial and tourism planning decisions on wetlands in this area of the country. This in order to plan activities in a sustainable way, with an interpretation center in Yaldad, Quellón commune, but above all to value the Chiloé wetlands, which are its only freshwater reservoir for the archipelago”.
He also highlighted that “on this occasion, four years later, I have had the opportunity to show the valuable work of the Outdoor Education Program that started from what the UACh Scientific-Academic Link has developed with the regional communities, and that was consolidated through of the PAR Explora Los Lagos with a territorial seal that links the identity between the development of science and technology with the regional cultural and natural heritage, giving a sense of belonging and environmental relevance. We were able to show the work carried out in the four years, with a successful work program, executed in a multidisciplinary manner, which has deeply benefited educational establishments and the general population, and which is attractively projected for a period of 2 years”.
XVIII RedPOP Congress
From July 10 to 16, the congress of the Network for the Popularization of Science and Technology in Latin America and the Caribbean (RedPOP) was held, an entity of which the Universidad Austral de Chile has been a partner since 2023. The meeting, which had as its motto “Diverse Voices: dialogue between knowledge and inclusion in the popularization of science”, is one of the most prestigious events on the continent and its objective is to contribute to the strengthening, exchange and active cooperation between groups, programs and centers of popularization of science.
As in previous editions, the event program offered several mini-courses, a conference, thematic panels, individual presentations, an ideas fair and simultaneous round tables where the various thematic areas of the congress were addressed: Art and science; Education in non-school spaces; Scientific journalism and new media; Museums and science centers; Production of materials; Professionalization and training of disseminators; Research and evaluation; Management, planning and marketing; Sustainability and well-living; Accessibility, inclusion and diversity; Gender and ethnic-racial relations; and Democracy, citizenship and society. Technical visits to relevant cultural spaces in Rio de Janeiro and a public event at Quinta da Boa Vista were also carried out.
Participants from Chile were Red POP 2023 ACHIPEC, the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics MAS, the InGenio Community at the Institute for Complex Engineering Systems, the CEAZA Scientific Center, the CTyS University of Antofagasta, the Science Communication Center of the Autonomous University, the Directorate of Links with the Through the Catholic University, the Millennium Institute of Complex Engineering Systems ICSI and the Austral University of Chile, through the Scientific-Academic Liaison area at the Puerto Montt Headquarters, among others.
