Although the main function of contact lenses is to improve the visual ability of the wearer, it is also possible to use the physical contact of the lens with the eye to perform various kinds of measurements, aimed at monitoring the health status of the eye and detecting the occurrence of eye diseases much earlier than would be possible with conventional diagnostic methods. An example of this is the soft contact lens that in this photo is shown doing its job. The lens, equipped with miniaturized instrumentation, is the work of an integrated team, among others, by Kyunghun Kim and chi hwan leefrom Purdue University, in West Lafayette, Indiana, United States.
