Congress of Peru approves to reject statements by the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro

( Spanish) –– With 72 votes in favor, the plenary session of the Peruvian Congress approved a motion that proposes “to express its rejection of the statements by the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro” that according to the measure constitute “an offense against our National Police of Peru.” The legislature also approved declaring him persona non grata.

Congress thus ruled against the statements of the Colombian president, who said that “in Peru they march like Nazis against their own people, breaking the American Convention on Human Rights.”

Petro made that claim during a speech he delivered last week at the inauguration of new ambassadors in Colombia. The president did not mention the Peruvian Police, but his statements occurred after images of thousands of policemen marching in the center of Lima were released this Thursday, when protests against the government of President Dina Boluarte were taking place, in the same place.

is seeking Petro’s reaction to the motion passed by Congress.

For its part, the Foreign Relations Commission of Congress had already approved this Tuesday the “rejection” of the president’s statements.
