Congress of Peru approves to indict Pedro Castillo for criminal organization and corruption

The Congress of Peru approves the final report of the constitutional complaint which recommends that the Prosecutor’s Office accuse former President Pedro Castillo of leading a criminal and corruption organization during his government.

The resolution was approved by 59 votes, 22 against and 3 abstentions; thus exceeding the 50 required for approval. The next step will be to send the complaint to the Public Ministry to formalize the investigation and initiate criminal proceedings, even with restrictive measures.

The report accuses Castillo of leading a criminal organization, which would have become entrenched at high levels of the State to obtain, through fraudulent public works tenders, some illicit benefits.

“The file of the constitutional accusation will be sent to the National Prosecutor so that it proceeds in accordance with its powers and the provisions of the Political Constitution of Peru,” said José Williams, president of Congress.

The report also advises that the former ministers of Transport and Communications, and of Housing, Construction and Sanitation, Juan Silva and Geiner Alvarado, are charged for the alleged commission of a crime against public peace.

Former President Castillo has been in pretrial detention since last December, when was fired after trying to dissolve Congress.
