Congress approves in fourth debate the ban on bullfighting in Colombia

This Tuesday, the House of Representatives gave the green light in the fourth and final debate to the bill that seeks to prohibit bullfighting in Colombia.

It is worth remembering that this initiative, whose speaker is the representative of the Green Alliance party, Alejandro Garcíawas stalled for a month in the legislative body, and will now have to go to conciliation with the text approved in the Senate of the Republic.

Prior to the approval of this initiative, Obstacles were overcome such as proposals to modify the agenda (the ban was on the first item on Tuesday’s agenda), as well as the creation of an accidental commission. The majorities even denied a proposal to eliminate the first article of the project. Finally, this bill passed after achieving 93 votes in favor and only two against.

This bill establishes a transition period to be able to carry out the economic and labor counterclaim of people or families who demonstrate that their livelihood derives from bullfighting. In addition, it allows the economic reconversion of bullrings.

“We did it. Today, after more than 7 years of fighting to prohibit bullfighting by Law, we can announce to the thousands of citizens who love life that Colombia eliminates this animal torture disguised as culture.“said Juan Carlos Losada.

The Senator Esmeralda Hernándezauthor of the bill, also spoke about what happened in the House, through X’s account.

“It is the law of the Republic! We did it, the bullfights are over in my Colombia. It is one of the happiest days of my life. Thank you from the heart, thanks to those who paved the way for us, thanks to Congress, thanks to life“, he pointed.

Another reaction that was not long in coming was that of President Gustavo Petrowho also celebrated the success of the initiative.

“Congratulations to those who finally made death not a spectacle. Those who have fun with the death of animals will end up having fun with the death of human beings; like those who burn books will end up burning human beings“said the head of state, who will now have to wait for the project to pass conciliation in the Senate to sanction it and turn it into law of the Republic.
