Conference on Electromobility Perspectives in Colombia and Bogotá

ECLAC’s International Trade Division, together with the Productive and Business Development and Economic Development Divisions, has been developing the project “Industrial Policy and Electromobility in International Trade”. This initiative is part of the “Inclusive, sustainable and intelligent cities within the framework of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean” program, financed by the German Cooperation (GIZ). The articulating axis of the project is to take advantage of the advantages and opportunities for the region that arise from the growing demand for electromobility solutions and the digital transformation of public transport, promoting the development of an industrial policy aimed at these objectives. Similar initiatives have been developed in Asia Pacific, a region in which there are several leading countries in the implementation of electromobility, such as China, Japan and the Republic of Korea.

ECLAC and the School of Economics of the Sergio Arboleda University of Colombia have organized the workshop “Conference on Electromobility Perspectives in Colombia and Bogotá”. This aims to present the products developed in the context of the CiSi program and the discussion of other methodologies and results obtained in the local context of electromobility. The aim is to initiate a technical discussion on the methodology for analyzing the links between international trade, electromobility and value chains at the regional and sub-regional levels. Specifically, the following topics are addressed:

  1. Disseminate the results of the ECLAC Project on Smart, Sustainable and Sustainable Cities, financed by the German Cooperation. ECLAC will present a set of regional studies, focusing on the case of Colombia;
  2. Promote among academics from various universities in Colombia, the discussion of the topic “The challenges of mobility in Colombia, with emphasis on the application of electromobility”
  3. Provide a space for dialogue on possible methodological advances to be followed to analyze and evaluate the possible effects of the transition from conventional mobility, towards sustainable, intelligent and sustainable mobility, based on the introduction of less polluting transport units.
  4. Promote the development of a quantitative tool that allows the analysis and evaluation of economic and social impact, based on the knowledge and dissemination of the national and subnational accounts of Colombia. In order to move forward in this process, ECLAC promotes the development of a new input-output matrix for a set of Colombian regions.
  5. Share among all the participants, the different advances in mobility in the different regions of Colombia, including the developments and pioneering advances of the Undersecretary of Mobility, which has been promoting a process of replacing conventional collective transport units with less polluting units and that currently maintains Bogotá as the city with the most electric buses in Latin America.
  6. Start an analytical process on the potential of value chains in the field of electromobility, by promoting a survey that will be disseminated among representatives of the private sector. This process will be carried out in conjunction with the Mobility Secretariat of Bogotá, and eventually with ANDI.
  7. Prepare critical mass for the organization of a broader Event in which private companies, academics and representatives of the public sector (Mobility Secretariats) would participate. In said workshop, evaluations of the impact of transit on sustainable and low-carbon mobility at the subregional level would be presented. It seeks to trace a path of future mobility demand that may be useful to decision makers to evaluate possible investments in favor of the promotion of the productive sector in Colombia and Latin America. This new Workshop would receive the visit of representatives of the Mobility Secretariats of other countries and/or cities: Brazil, Mexico, and eventually Argentina, which are the countries with the greatest productive potential in the sector.

Academics and experts linked to the electromobility sector will participate in the workshop, who will address their evaluations and strategies for a future emission-free transport. This initial workshop, aimed at the Latin American public, is open to academics, private sector actors and officials from statistical institutes and governments interested in the subject.
