The former Georgia president has gone on several hunger strikes since his imprisonment two years ago after being convicted in absentia for corruption and abuse of power.
These images of an emaciated Mikhail Saakashvili in a trial by videoconference have raised alarm about his state of health and have caused the expulsion of the Georgian ambassador to Ukraine.
Hunger strikes
Saakashvili, Georgia’s president from 2004 to 2013, has gone on several hunger strikes since his imprisonment two years ago. Besides, ensures that he is being poisoned. He was tried in absentia in 2018 and sentenced to six years in prison for corruption and abuse of power. During his exile in Ukraine, he became governor of Odessa.
He was arrested in 2021, after returning to support the opposition.
His lawyers and Ukraine demand that he be treated in a Western European hospital.
The Georgian justice, for its part, assured two months ago that the European Court of Human Rights had rejected his request to be treated in Poland.
