The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, announced on Friday that the border between Colombia and his country will open on September 26.
“I am very happy to announce that as of #26Sep we will jointly open the borders between Venezuela and Colombia. In addition, we will resume flights between Caracas – Bogotá and Valencia – Bogotá. The exchange and cooperation between our peoples restart on the right foot” , wrote the president, through his Twitter account.
Minutes later, his Colombian counterpart Gustavo Petro ratified the news, with a message on his social networks.
“As a first step, the air connection and cargo transport between our countries will be resumed. We confirm the Government’s commitment to reestablish brotherly relations,” tweeted the Colombian president.
In this way, the restablishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, after the appointment of Armando Benedetti as ambassador in Caracas and the former foreign minister Félix Plasencia as the diplomatic representative of Venezuela in Bogotá, last month.
For their part, commercial and industrial unions from both countries coincided, for a meeting held last month in Cúcuta, in the urgency of reactivating the productive and commercial apparatus after seven years of closure. They advocated building not only commercial and cargo transport relationships, but also turning this area into a meeting point for strategic and long-term relations in a formal way.
Relations between Maduro and former President Iván Duque, who recognized Guaidó as interim president, were marked by constant mutual accusations, especially since 2019 when humanitarian aid was attempted to cross the border.
