Colombian justice investigates Gustavo Petro's son for money laundering

First modification:

The Colombian Prosecutor’s Office indicated this Tuesday, March 21, that it is criminally investigating the eldest son of President Gustavo Petro for alleged money laundering, in a scandal involving a drug trafficker and that has shaken the government.

By our correspondent in Bogotá, Paula Carrillo.

Colombian Attorney General Francisco Barbosa accepted President Gustavo Petro’s request to investigate his own son Nicolás, when asked about the matter.

“We are criminally investigating” Nicolás Petro and “assets from possible money laundering,” Barboza said.

At the beginning of March, a political scandal knocked on the doors of the Palacio de Nariño. The ex-wife of Nicolás Petro Burgos stated in the media that he had received money from a former drug trafficker and a questioned businessman during the last elections.

The government is risking its reputation

Although the purpose was to contribute to the current president’s campaign, the son bought a property with those resources, according to Daisurys Vásquez, his former partner.

The president’s eldest son is an important political figure in the north of the country. He is a deputy for the Historical Pact, Petro’s left-wing coalition.

The battered reputation of the so-called “government of change” promised by the Colombian president depends on the investigation announced by Barbosa.
