Colombian Foreign Minister, ECLAC Deputy Executive Secretary, UNFPA Regional Director and other high-ranking authorities will inaugurate the Fifth Meeting of the Regional Conference on Population and Development

THAT: Fifth Meeting of the Regional Conference on Population and Development of Latin America and the Caribbean

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Luis Gilberto Murillo; the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Javier Medina Vásquez; the Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Susana Sottoli; the Minister of Development Planning of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Sergio Cusicanqui, and the Ambassador of Honduras on Special Mission for Women’s Affairs and President of the 57th session of the United Nations Commission on Population and Development, Noemí Espinoza, will inaugurate the Fifth Meeting of the Regional Conference on Population and Developmentwhich will take place from July 3 to 4 at the Cartagena de Indias Convention Center, Colombia.

During the meeting, senior representatives of government, regional and international institutions, the private sector, academia and civil society will address the achievements of the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development and the challenges for its 30-year implementation of the Program of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). Likewise, they will analyze the progress and challenges to guarantee the full exercise of the rights of people with disabilities.

In the context of the meeting, ECLAC will present the document entitled Population, development and rights in Latin America and the Caribbeanwhich constitutes the second regional report on the implementation of the Montevideo Consensus and analyzes progress in the implementation of the priority measures of the agreement eleven years after its adoption.

The Fifth Session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development will be preceded on July 2 by parallel events and civil society activities.

The Conference is currently chaired by the Government of the Plurinational State of Bolivia and has the strategic support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
