Colombian coffee exports grew 22% in May

The National Coffee Fund (FoNC) presented the results of exports corresponding to May 2023.

During the fifth month of the year, external sales of coffee by the National Federation of Coffee Growers, the entity in charge of the FoNC, increased by 22% compared to 2022, going from exporting 152 thousand bags to 185 thousand.

According to the institution, on a national scale, the total figure reached 846,000 bags and in the last 12 months it exceeded 10.7 million bags.

Regarding the internal consumption of the product, this indicator registered a growth of 5% at the end of May.

This represented an increase of 8 thousand 60-kilogram equivalent bags of green coffee compared to the previous year. That is, it went from consuming 163,000 bags to 171,000, despite inflation.

The FoNC also pointed out that in the last 12 months the climatic variables that affect coffee production have impacted the flowering and filling processes of the grain in the coffee zone of the country.

Additionally, the average daily temperature present in the coffee production areas decreased, which increases the number of days required to complete the formation and ripening processes of the fruit. This led to a reduction in the harvest and a delay in it.

In May 2022, Colombian coffee production had reached 1,017,000 bags. For the fifth month of the current year, this figure was reduced to 806,000 bagswhich represents a negative variation of 21%.

So far this year (January-May 2023), production fell 9% to 4.06 million bags from 4.4 million in the same period last year. While in the last 12 months, production fell 14% to 10.6 million bags from 12.3 million a year ago.
