The felling of trees is gaining ground in the Colombian Amazon jungle: according to the United Nations Organization, between 2018 and 2021, Colombia lost 7,018 km2 due to deforestation. Most of the destroyed forests were in the Amazon. The protection of this forest is essential for the new left-wing president Gustavo Petro who wants to act quickly and proposes the creation of an emergency fund for the Amazon.
This reforestation program is organized by CORPOAMAZONIA, a state agency that is in charge of protecting the Amazon rainforest and raising awareness among its inhabitants about the importance of preserving the environment. In addition, there are various financial programs to support their activities.
Much of the land in the Amazon rainforest belongs to indigenous peoples. Therefore, it is essential that they are included in the process of reforestation and reconstruction of the forest. That is why Colombian President Gustavo Petro proposes to pay them to be officially the guardians of the forest. This type of program is already used in various regions of the Colombian Amazon.
This program is one of the reasons that drives the government of the left-wing president towards the creation of an international emergency fund to save the Amazon jungle. The Head of State wants to raise around 1,000 million dollars a year for 20 years to carry out his project.
A project that has been defended before the UN on two occasions: at the headquarters in New York and at COP 2 7, the international conference on climate change in Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt. Pending the creation of the fund, the Colombian government plans to start the process with its own means. Leticia’s farmers will also be included in the project.
