This Wednesday, Colombia took the first step to open its Embassy in the West Bank city of Ramallah, seat of the Government of the Palestinian Authority, after Bogotá recognized the Palestinian State during the era of former president Juan Manuel Santos.

“President (Gustavo) Petro has given the instruction that we install the Colombian Embassy in Ramallah. The representation of Colombia in Ramallah. That is the next step we are going to take,” reported the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luis Gilberto Murillo. , as reported by Noticias RCN.

In October 2023, Petro announced his decision to open Colombian representation in Ramallah during a meeting with the Palestinian ambassador to Colombia, Raouf Almalki. The measure was announced after the recognition of Palestine as a “free, independent and sovereign State” by Santos shortly before handing over to his successor, former president Iván Duque.

This occurs after Colombia has broken its diplomatic relations with Israel in response to the bloody offensive of the Israeli Army on the Gaza Strip following the attacks by Palestinian militias on October 7, which left 1,200 dead and 240 hostages. .

The Gaza authorities, controlled by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), have this Wednesday raised the number of Palestinian deaths to more than 35,700 due to Israel’s military offensive following attacks by Palestinian militias.
