The vice president and foreign minister of Colombia, Marta Lucía Ramírez, said on Wednesday that they will not invite any representation of the governments of Venezuela and Nicaragua to the inauguration of the elected president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro.
The official told the media that, during a meeting she held on Monday with Álvaro Leyva, the future foreign minister appointed by Petro, she explained to him that “it is always the outgoing government that invites” and that, of course, neither “the dictatorship “of Nicolás Maduro nor the government of Daniel Ortega would be invited.
In that order of things, Ramírez said that he raised the idea with the deputy chancellor that they were not “going to invite those two dictators.” “He agreed, so we don’t have any representation there,” he assured.
Ramírez also confirmed the presence of twelve heads of state for the event, almost all of Latin America, except King Felipe VI, of Spain. Among them, the leaders of Chile, Peru, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Panama, the Netherlands, Honduras, Costa Rica and Argentina. The Joe Biden government will be represented by Samantha Power, director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
