Colombian authorities reported this Monday that they dismantled a transnational network dedicated to migrant smuggling bound for the United States and who arrested four people in different regions of the country.
The operation was led by Colombian Migration and had the support of the Judicial Police and the direction of the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation. According to the authorities, the organization recruited “Colombian citizens through travel agencies that promoted tours and fictitious tourist plans to Mexico, to later pass them irregularly to the United States.”
Through these transnational illegal smuggling operations, the members of the network offered migrants “personal guides” in Mexico who accompanied them to the southern border “guaranteeing their entry” into US territory.
“They promised to guide them along the route through a personal guide who supposedly accompanied them, drove them, and dropped them off at a US hotel or airport, which would guarantee their entry into US territory,” reads a document issued by the Colombian immigration agency.
According to Colombian Migration, those captured were transferred to a jail and must answer for the alleged crimes of migrant smuggling and criminal conspiracy before the Colombian authorities.
