The Colombian immigration authority denounced that Colombian migrants deported from the United States are receiving “cruel and degrading” treatment, for which it announced Thursday in a statement that it provisionally suspended the receipt of flights with nationals deported from that country.
The communication from Migración Colombia is known after the United States Department of Security had decided to cancel two flights scheduled for this week with approximately 1,200 migrants returned from the United States. The itineraries were part of a pilot plan that was suspended.
According to Colombia’s statement, there was a “breach of the agreements on the humanitarian treatment of returned Colombians.” The Colombian immigration authority says that its American counterparts are handcuffing migrants, “even women mothers of families.”

“There are recurring complaints about the poor conditions in the detention centers and mistreatment during flights, which represented a determining factor in the decisions adopted in the last hours,” said the director of Colombian Migration, Fernando García.
The official warned that it is not the first time that these types of flights have been cancelled. He recalled that a similar episode occurred in the past months, which led to the loss of “the institutional effort designed for the reception and attention of compatriots.”
Migration Colombia considers it imperative that coordination dialogues be resumed regarding the migratory situation of those who remain on the southern border of the United States waiting to resolve their situation.
The flights with migrants were covered by Title 42, which was the regulation created in the framework of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States to speed up the deportation procedures for illegal migrants arriving in that country and which expires on the next 11 of May.
