Colombia and Venezuela announce the reopening of their common border on September 26

First modification:

The announcement was made by both presidents, Gustavo Petro and Nicolás Maduro, within the framework of the rapprochement that Caracas and Bogotá have resumed after the failed policy of isolation carried out by the previous Colombian president. The air connection and cargo transport will also be resumed.

A new step in the rapprochement between Colombia and Venezuela.

After seven years of vehicular closure and gradual deterioration of relations between the two nations, Gustavo Petro, president of Colombia, and his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro, announced the reopening of the common border on September 26.

A step forward in the objective of both governments to restore diplomatic relations and a relevant economic leap for the sister countries.

The Colombian president also pointed out that “the air connection and cargo transport between our countries will be resumed.”

In this sense, the Venezuelan head of state welcomed the measure: “I am very happy to announce that as of September 26” we will jointly open the borders between Venezuela and Colombia. In addition, we will resume flights between Caracas-Bogotá and Valencia-Bogotá. The exchange and cooperation between our peoples are starting off on the right foot”, he confirmed on his Twitter account on September 9.

One of the first steps of the recently inaugurated Colombian president was to appoint an ambassador in Caracas, absent because the previous Government of Iván Duque did not recognize the Presidency of Nicolás Maduro as legitimate, turning his attention to Juan Guaidó, self-proclaimed head of state on the basis of articles 333, 350 and 233 of the Venezuelan Constitution.

Since then, Bogotá has carried out a policy of international isolation that various analysts have described as failed given the persistence of the Maduro government and the new moment that it is experiencing at the international level when Europe is experiencing an energy crisis in the context of the war in Ukraine and Russian pressure.
