CNNC’s First Self-Developed BNCT Cancer Treatment Center Sets Up in Tai’an

C

The China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE) of the China National Nuclear Corporation (C) and the Central Hospital in the city of Tai’an, in east China’s Shandong province, they signed a cooperation agreement for the construction of a treatment center based on Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT).

This is C’s first self-developed BNCT cancer treatment center, from which it owns totally independent intellectual property rights, which is entering the application phase in the demonstration market.

Under the cooperation agreement, CIAE will provide a high-intensity proton cyclotron-based BNCT facility, the first of its kind in China, to Tai’an City Central Hospital, to jointly promote the implementation of the BNCT demonstration project. cyclotron based.

The BNCT treatment center is expected to complete the construction of its buildings in June 2024 and be ready for operation in June 2026.

The case of C climate action is presented at COP27

This is another important example of CIAE’s commitment to the integrated development of the innovation chain of nuclear technology and the industrial chain, and of its successful application of nuclear technology in the field of people’s health.

BNCT is one of the world’s leading targeted cancer therapy technologies in the treatment of tumors, and is often used in the treatment of head and neck tumors and melanoma.

CIAE’s BNCT facility, based on a high-intensity proton cyclotron, can be used not only for cancer treatment, but also for the production of radioisotope drugs, and will be an ideal choice for compact accelerator-based neutron sources in the future.
