Claudia Sheinbaum holds a meeting with the CEO of Citigroup, Jane Fraser

Sheinbaum published the photo of their meeting on her X account. “I was very happy to talk with her about the moment Mexico is experiencing and our promising future,” she said in the publication.

The CEO of Citi congratulated her on her historic victory on Election Day on June 2 and celebrated that it took place in a democratic environment, expressing her pleasure because Mexico will have a female president for the first time.

“It was a notable event to bring together the first woman elected to be president of Mexico and the first woman elected to lead one of the most relevant and emblematic banks on Wall Street. At the meeting, Fraser reaffirmed Citi’s commitment to Mexico and its government and exchanged ideas about the opportunities that the country offers in the coming years and Citi’s support for the sustainable economic projects with shared well-being that the president-elect has proposed and that both leaders share,” the bank highlighted in a statement.

The meeting becomes relevant after the bank announced in January 2022 that it would sell the consumer division -Banamex- to focus on the business of large companies.

Manuel Romo, general director of Citibanamex, and Ernesto Torres Cantú, international general director of Citi, were also present at the meeting.

The division of the two banks is scheduled to occur in the second half of this year and Banamex will go to the stock market months later.
