The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to China’s Taiwan region, ignoring stern warnings from the Chinese side.

In a statement, the ministry said the visit sent “wrong signals” to separatist forces seeking “Taiwan independence.”

The ministry added that it has submitted representations and solemn protests to the US side.

Full text of the statement:

“On August 2, ignoring strong opposition and serious representations from China, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, visited the Chinese region of Taiwan. This is a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three joint communiqués of China and the United States. It has a serious impact on the political foundation of China-US relations, and seriously violates China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

It seriously undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and sends a seriously wrong signal to separatist forces for “Taiwan independence.” China firmly opposes and firmly condemns this fact, and has made a serious deal and strongly protested to the United States.

There is only one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory, and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legal government that represents all of China. This has been clearly recognized by Resolution 2758 of 1971 of the United Nations General Assembly. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, 181 countries have established diplomatic relations with China on the basis of the one-China principle. The one-China principle is a universal consensus of the international community and a basic norm in international relations.

China explains why the US should be responsible for Taiwan Strait tensions

In 1979, the United States made a clear commitment in the China-US Joint Statement on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations: “The United States of America recognizes the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of China. Within this context, the people of the United States will maintain cultural, commercial, and other unofficial relations with the people of Taiwan.” Congress, as part of the US government, is inherently obligated to strictly observe the US government’s one-China policy and to refrain from any official dealings with the Chinese region of Taiwan.

China opposes a visit to Taiwan by US congressmen at all times, and the US executive branch bears the responsibility to stop such a visit. Since Speaker Pelosi is the acting leader of the US Congress, her visit and activities in Taiwan, in any form and for any reason, is a major political provocation to enhance official US exchanges with Taiwan. . China absolutely does not accept this, and the Chinese people absolutely reject it.

“There is only one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory, and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legal government that represents all of China”

The Taiwan issue is the most important and most sensitive issue at the very heart of China-US relations. The Taiwan Strait is facing a new round of tensions and serious challenges, and the root cause is the repeated maneuvers by the Taiwanese and US authorities to change the status quo. Taiwanese authorities have continued to seek US support for their independence program.

They refuse to recognize the 1992 Consensus, go to great lengths to promote “de-initialization” and promote “gradual independence.” The United States, for its part, has tried to use Taiwan to contain China. It constantly distorts, obscures, and deepens the one-China principle, intensifies its official exchanges with Taiwan, and emboldens “Taiwan independence” separatist activities. These moves, like playing with fire, are extremely dangerous. Those who play with fire will perish for it.

The position of the Chinese Government and people on the Taiwan issue has been consistent. It is the firm commitment of the more than 1.4 billion Chinese people to resolutely safeguard state sovereignty and territorial integrity. It is the common aspiration and sacred responsibility of all the sons and daughters of China to realize the complete reunification of the motherland. You cannot defy the will of the people and you cannot reverse the trend of the times.

No country, no force and no individual should disregard the firm resolve, strong will and great ability of the Chinese Government and people to uphold state sovereignty and territorial integrity and achieve the reunification and rejuvenation of the motherland. China will definitely take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to the US President’s visit. All consequences arising from it will have to be borne by the US side and the separatist forces of “Taiwan independence”.

“In 1979, The United States Made A Clear Commitment In The China-U.S. Joint Statement On Establishing Diplomatic Relations”

China and the United States are two important countries. The right way for them to treat each other is mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, non-confrontation and win-win cooperation. The Taiwan issue is China’s purely internal affair, and no other country has the right to act as a judge on the Taiwan issue. China strongly urges the US to stop playing the “Taiwan card” and using it to contain China. It must stop meddling in Taiwan and interfering in China’s internal affairs.

It must stop supporting and colluding with “Taiwan independence” separatist forces in any form. He must stop saying one thing and do the opposite on the Taiwan question. He must stop distorting, obscuring and hollowing out the One China principle. It should take credible steps to strictly observe the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiqués, honor the “five no’s” commitment made by the US leadership (i.e., not seek a “new Cold War”; not trying to change China’s system; revitalizing its alliances is not against China; not supporting “Taiwan independence”; not seeking conflict with China), and not going down the wrong and dangerous path”
