Chinese and Indian troops have begun to withdraw in a coordinated and planned manner from the Ladakh border area, which Beijing and New Delhi dispute, after the signing of an agreement between the two Asian giants in an attempt to reduce tension in the area.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has indicated in a statement, through the spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning, that these movements have occurred after both nations have reached an agreement after a meeting at the military level.
China and India have held at least 16 rounds of joint dialogue to untangle the crisis since Ladakh was the scene of a confrontation between Indian and Chinese soldiers in June 2020, without using weapons, in what was the worst confrontation between the two neighbors in 45 years, which resulted in the death of at least 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Uzbekistan next week, marking Xi’s first trip abroad. from China since the pandemic began, according to the ‘South China Morning Post’.
India and China fought a brief border war in 1962. India disputes China’s control of 38,000 square kilometers of land in Aksai Chin, which it claims is part of Ladakh. Beijing in turn claims 90,000 square kilometers of territory in Arunachal Pradesh, which it considers to be part of southern Tibet.
