Chinese authorities warned on Saturday that the passage of a German Navy frigate through the Taiwan Strait “undermines the security” of the region and creates “security risks”, especially for countries in the area.
“The German side’s actions send false signals. The troops are constantly maintaining a high level of combat readiness to counter all threats and provocations with ease,” said Li Xi, spokesman for the Chinese Army’s Eastern Theater Command.
The Chinese government has indicated that the forces of the Asian giant have mobilized their maritime and air forces to escort the German ships and control the entire process after the German warship ‘Baden-Württemberg’ crossed the area, of particular sensitivity for the Chinese government as tensions with Taiwan grow, together with a second supply ship, the ‘Frankfurt am Main’.
China still considers Taiwan to be another province under its sovereignty and claims that the waters in question are Chinese and not international, as Taipei claims. However, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said that these are “international waters” and that, as such, Germany has decided to use this route because it is “the shortest and safest” for its vessels.
Warships from other countries, including the United States, have also passed through the Strait in the past, sparking strong protests from Beijing.
