Zhang Jianhua, director of the National Energy Administration (NEA), said China’s ongoing non-fossil energy development was not slowed down by last year’s global energy supply shortage, even as several European countries returned to start up its coal-fired power plants.
The share of coal consumption in the country fell from 65.8% in 2014 to 56% in 2021. The average annual decline of 1.4 percentage points was the fastest in history, Zhang said.
It added that the share of clean energy consumption increased from 16.9 percent to 25.5 percent in the same period, accounting for more than 60 percent of the increase in total energy consumption.
“By 2030, we expect the share of non-fossil energy consumption to continue to grow at an average rate of one percentage point a year, and we are on track to meet the goal of peak carbon dioxide emissions in 2030, and we trust it,” said Zhang.
