China sanctions two Americans in response to US allegations of abuses in Tibet

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced this Friday sanctions against two US citizens in response to the restrictions imposed by Washington on the Asian country for alleged human rights abuses in the Tibet region.

The two affected are the academic Yu Maochun, known as Miles Yu in the American country, and the member of the Executive Commission for China of the United States Congress Todd Stein.

According to the Asian media ‘Global Times’, the United States announced sanctions against two Chinese officials for alleged Human Rights abuses committed in Tibet, actions considered illegal by China in addition to serious damage to relations between the two powers.

In response, China will confiscate all assets that both citizens own in China, prohibit any relationship of organizations or individuals within China with them, and bar them and their immediate family members from entering the country.

As the aforementioned media outlet has stated, Yu Maochun would have played a relevant role in the tensions between Washington and China, while Stein would be director of Government Relations of the International Campaign for Tibet, having promoted legislative projects against the interests of China.

This is not the first time China has sanctioned US citizens. In August 2022, the authorities announced measures against the speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, and her relatives, due to the “interference” of the leader “in the internal affairs” of the country when visiting Taiwan despite the alerts.
