Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang has said his country would be willing to mediate in the Middle East conflict between Israel and the Palestinian territories, he said during two separate phone conversations with his Israeli and Palestinian counterparts, Eli Cohen and Riyadh al Maliki respectively.
According to the Xinhua news agency, the Chinese minister has asked both parties to the conflict to “show political courage and resume peace talks”, in which China is willing to mediate.
“We believe that the key to solving the Israeli and Palestinian problem lies in upholding the concept of common security. China has no self-interest in this issue, and only hopes that Israel and Palestine can coexist peacefully and maintain regional peace and stability.” , reads the statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, according to the aforementioned agency.
For his part, Cohen thanked China for its willingness, although in the conversation he stressed that Israel urgently considers the “danger it sees in Iran’s nuclear program, a fear that is shared by several countries in the region, including those that share diplomatic relations with Iran”, reports ‘The Times of Israel’.
Al Maliki has also thanked China for diplomatic support in various international forums, reports the Palestinian agency Wafa, stressing his “support for China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
