The Chinese Government has applauded this Friday, as an example of the application of International Law on the crisis in the Middle East, the arrest warrants for alleged war crimes and crimes against Humanity issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the Prime Minister of Israel , Benjamin Neyanyahu, his former Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, and the military leader of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, Mohamed Deif.
“China will support any effort by the international community that contributes to defending the authority of international law on the Palestinian issue,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a press conference following Thursday’s court decision.
“China has always been on the side of justice and equity, as it has also been on the side of International Law,” the spokesperson explained this Friday after learning of the arrest warrants from the ICC, an organization of which China is not a State. part for not being a signatory of the Rome Statute that served as the court’s embryo.
However, the spokesperson has also asked the ICC judges to maintain “an objective and fair position”, exercise their power “in accordance with the law” and interpret “general international law comprehensively and in good faith in accordance with uniform standards”.
HUMANITARIAN CRISIS
The spokesperson recalled that the humanitarian conflict in Gaza has led to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis and that his country opposes “any activity that violates International Law, including International Humanitarian Law.”
In his appearance, reported by the Chinese state newspaper ‘Global Times’, the spokesperson also took the opportunity to condemn “any practice that causes any harm to the civilian population, as well as any attack against civilian facilities.”
