China frees three US citizens in alleged prisoner swap

MADRID 28 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Chinese authorities have released three American citizens who remained in prison after being “unjustly” detained, according to statements from the White House to television.

A spokesperson for the White House National Security Council confirmed to the channel that Mark Swidan, Kai Li and John Leung have been released and will “return to the country and be reunited with their families” for the first time in many years.

The three American citizens had been detained “unfairly,” as stated by the White House, ensuring that after their release there are no nationals retained in the Asian giant with that status.

“Thanks to the efforts of this administration and diplomacy with the People’s Republic of China, all Americans wrongfully detained in the PRC are home,” the spokesperson said.

According to sources, Swidan, Li and Leung were released “in exchange for unidentified Chinese nationals.”

The men had been arrested for different reasons: one of them was accused of drug trafficking and sentenced to death, while the other two were in prison on charges of espionage; one was serving a ten-year prison sentence and the other was facing life in prison.
