China formally indicts influential Taiwanese activist for "secession"

25 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Chinese authorities have formally charged this Tuesday the influential Taiwanese activist Yang Chih Yuan, accused of “secession” and eight months after he was arrested in the midst of an increase in tension between the parties.

Yang, a leading Taiwanese independence activist and politician, was arrested by Chinese security forces in the city of Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, hours after former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi left the country to visit Taipei, the Taiwanese capital, in a visit that drew harsh criticism from Beijing.

The Asian giant was quick to take action in this regard and carried out several military exercises around the island, which it considers to be one more province under its territory.

Now, the Wenzhou Prosecutor’s Office has reported that the activist has been formally charged after months without providing details about his situation and has pointed out that his case is being reviewed, according to a statement from the entity itself.

The Taiwan authorities have assured that they have tried to contact Beijing to obtain information about Yang’s detention, although they have not received any direct response.

“The government reiterates that Yang is innocent and asks the Communist Party of China for his release so that he can return to the island as soon as possible,” they said in a statement to which the television network has had access.

Chinese television reported in August 2022 that Yang had been taken into custody in Wenzhou for having been involved in “separatist activities”.
