Beijing accuses London of recruiting a couple employed by the Chinese government

June 3 () –

China’s Ministry of State Security revealed this Monday that it has dismantled an alleged espionage plot by the British Intelligence Service, MI6, which it has accused of recruiting a married couple employed by the Chinese Government.

The authorities have indicated that the man, Wang, applied in 2015 to participate in an exchange program in the United Kingdom and that the M16, valuing his position in a confidential central role, quickly facilitated the approval of his application, reports the newspaper ‘Global Times’.

Upon Wang’s arrival, MI6 organized its staff to provide him with special attention, including invitations to dinners and sightseeing tours. The British agency, discovering her “desire” for money, offered her a part-time consulting opportunity with high pay, an offer she accepted.

Wang became suspicious, but continued to provide “consulting” services. Later, MI6 revealed the situation to request his services for the British Government, promising greater remuneration and security guarantees. After providing her with professional training, he pressured her to recruit his wife, Zhou, promising double financial compensation.

The Chinese authorities, “with a thorough investigation and solid evidence”, have detained and interrogated both. The case is currently under further investigation. Earlier this year, Beijing reported the arrest of another man who had been detained on charges of being an alleged MI6 spy. Then, both countries exchanged accusations about espionage, which is perceived as a threat to national security.
