Renovated in 2019, the Chinese spy base installed in Cuba has the objective of expanding its intelligence service in this region of the world, which would mean the most direct challenge to the continental United States since the end of the cold war.

According to AFP, a US official confirmed that the operation of this espionage unit was already known. “This is well documented in the intelligence record,” he said. “[En 2021] We were made aware of a number of sensitive efforts by the PRC around the world to expand its overseas logistics, base and collection infrastructure globally.”
In an interview for RFI, the expert and director of security studies at Universae, Chema Gil, recalled that China already had a very powerful intelligence service installed in Cuba for a long time, and that updating this base “has more than to do with the fact that very advanced technologies applied to intelligence are going to be implemented. It can be very disturbing for the world scheme. Many want to see a loss of influence from the United States, but that is still a long way off, ”he estimated.
Questioned by the base at a regular press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said he was “unaware of the situation” before criticizing US policy on Cuba.
“As we all know, spreading rumors and slander is a common tactic of the United States, and wanton interference in other countries’ internal affairs is its patent,” Wang said.
For his part, the US official who confirmed the existence of this spy base in Cuba, assured that diplomatic efforts have stopped China from developing its activities on the Caribbean island.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is scheduled to travel to China next weekend, rescheduling a visit that was canceled in February after a tension-filled incident involving a suspected surveillance balloon passed over the United States.
