The Government of China has criticized the president-elect of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, for speaking with the president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing Wen, a “serious interference” in matters of an internal nature in the opinion of Beijing, which questions any type of contact with an island that he claims as his own.
“It is a flagrant violation of the Czech Republic’s commitment to the one-China principle,” said Tuesday the spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning, who confirmed at a press conference the filing of a formal protest in Prague.
In this sense, he has urged Pavel to take “immediate” measures to “correct the error”, according to the Bloomberg agency.
Pavel prevailed on Saturday in the presidential elections of the Czech Republic against former Prime Minister Andrej Babis and, among his first international contacts, was Tsai. As explained by the future president, the Czech Republic and Taiwan “share the values of freedom, democracy and Human Rights.”
He also expressed his willingness to meet “in person” with the president of Taiwan, who for her part offered to strengthen ties with a country that seems to leave behind the doctrine related to China defended by the outgoing head of state, Milos Zeman, a fervent supporter of relations with Beijing.
