Beijing asks “not to add fuel to the fire” and appeals to “dialogue and negotiation” to “resolve the crisis” in Ukraine

July 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of China has branded this Monday as “irresponsible” the decision of the United States to deliver cluster bombs to Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion and has stressed that “no fuel should be added to the fire” of the war, unleashed on February 24, 2022.

“The irresponsible delivery of cluster munitions can easily lead to problems at the humanitarian level,” said the spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning, who stressed that “humanitarian concerns and legitimate military security needs must be addressed in balanced way and with an attitude of prudence and containment”.

“China has taken note of the relevant decisions of the United States, which have caused widespread concern in the international community,” stressed Mao, who recalled that “many countries have clearly expressed their opposition” to Washington’s decision, according to picked up by the Chinese television network CCTV.

On the other hand, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stressed that Beijing “always believes that dialogue and negotiation are the only possible way to resolve the Ukrainian crisis.” “The relevant parties should not add fuel to the fire, escalate the conflict and further aggravate the crisis in Ukraine,” she concluded.

The United States approved on Friday the delivery of cluster bombs to Ukraine, an initiative widely criticized because this type of ammunition is prohibited by international treaties due to the damage it causes among the civilian population. US President Joe Biden defended the move despite calling it a “difficult decision.”

In response, the Russian ambassador to Washington, Anatoli Antonov, has stressed in recent hours that Washington has admitted “de facto the commission of war crimes” by declaring “openly that civilians would die from US cluster weapons.”
