China calls on the US to respect Honduras' right to decide its foreign policy

March 21 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has called on the United States to respect Honduras’ right to decide on its foreign policy, days after Honduran President Xiomara Castro announced the resumption of relations between the two countries.

“Any sovereign state has the right to independently choose to develop diplomatic relations with other countries, and other countries have no right to interfere,” Chinese ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said Monday.

Thus, he has indicated that, in the event that it is shown that Washington has exerted diplomatic pressure on Honduras, the US statement that “‘each country decides its own foreign policy based on sovereignty’ is pure talk.”

For this reason, Wang has urged the US authorities to “seriously respect the right of all countries to independently decide their foreign policies and stop interfering in the sovereign affairs of countries.”

Beijing recalled that the United States established diplomatic relations with China “on the basis of recognition of the one-China principle more than 40 years ago.” In addition, he has indicated that 181 countries have established relations, for which he has welcomed the decision of the Government of Honduras.

“We are willing to establish and develop bilateral relations with Honduras on the basis of equality and mutual respect,” said the spokesman, before celebrating the fact that in recent years China has established relations with several Latin American countries.
