China attributes the Guatemalan president's trip to Taiwan to "selfish interests"

19 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Government of China has criticized the imminent trip to Taiwan by the president of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, alleging that it would go “against the world trend” and would imply a rebuff to the “aspirations” of the Guatemalan population for “selfish interests.”

Giammattei, who recently received the President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing Wen, in the Central American country, has confirmed that he will return this visit at the end of the week, in an approach that contrasts with the direction taken by neighboring Honduras, which this year began diplomatic relations with China.

The spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang Wenbin, stated this Wednesday at a press conference that there are already 182 countries with relations with Beijing, which “demonstrates that the principle of ‘one China has the overwhelming support of the international community. “.

Instead, according to Wang, Taiwan seeks to “expand its ‘international space'” at the cost of entering “a blind alley”, given the “consensus” that the theses defended from Beijing would generate.

“The independence of Taiwan will never happen. Any movement that ignores the world trend and International Justice (…) is destined to fail,” the diplomatic spokesman has ruled, according to statements released by the Ministry itself.
