The Governments of Peru and China have agreed this Friday to sign new bilateral cooperation agreements in order to reinforce the “comprehensive strategic partnership” between both states, within the framework of an official visit by the Peruvian president, Dina Boluarte, to her counterpart. Chinese, Xi Jinping.
“We are strengthening bilateral relations between Peru and China! The President of the Republic, Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra, and the Chinese President Xi Jinping, participated in the signing of a series of agreements that strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between both countries,” the Peruvian Presidency said on the social network X.
For his part, Xi has celebrated the partnership with Peru, “the first Latin American country to sign a package of free trade agreements with China”, and has reiterated his commitment to working with the Peruvian Executive to “promote its comprehensive strategic partnership to new heights”.
“China attaches great importance to the development of its relations with Peru, and is willing to work with Peru to consolidate political mutual trust, deepen practical cooperation, promote mutual learning among civilizations and improve multilateral coordination,” Xi said, according to statements collected by the Xinhua agency.
The Asian leader has highlighted the “important role” that Chinese companies have played not only in the economic development of the Andean country, but also “in improving the living conditions of the population through important cooperation projects.”
“IMPROVE SYNERGY”
In this context, Xi has urged to “improve synergy” between both parties to “coordinate bilateral cooperation in mining, energy, manufacturing and agriculture, and increase cooperation in emerging areas such as new energies, digital economy, artificial intelligence and digital healthcare,” among others.
“We welcome the entry of more high-quality Peruvian products into the Chinese market and hope that Peru will provide a sound legal and political environment for Chinese investment and long-term cooperation,” he added, urging joint efforts to complete the Chancay port as planned.
On the other hand, Xinhua points out, Xi has demanded greater cooperation in education, culture and tourism, among other areas, in order to “lay a more solid foundation of public support” for bilateral relations. In this regard, for example, he has promised more scholarships so that Peruvian students can study in China.
For his part, Boluarte has highlighted the “fruitful results” of “bilateral exchanges and cooperation in politics, economy, trade and culture” carried out in recent years and has praised “the important contributions made by inhabitants of Chinese descent in the history”.
“In particular, the investment and cooperation involving Chinese companies in Peru have not only created a large number of jobs for Peru, but have also brought advanced technology and experience,” the Peruvian president added and this has been reflected in the mentioned agency.
“IMPORTANT MEMBERS OF THE GLOBAL SOUTH”
On the other hand, the Chinese president has highlighted the nature of both countries as “important emerging markets in the Pacific basin” and as “important members of the Global South”, reason for “expanding coordination and promoting the common development of the Global South”, betting on the development of relations not only with Peru, but in general with Latin America and the Caribbean.
Along these lines, Boluarte has recognized that “Peru admires the great achievements of China” and that he “hopes to learn from the successful experience” of the Asian giant “for the better development of Peru.”
Thus, the president has committed to “offering a favorable business environment for Chinese companies” and has stated that “more Chinese companies (will be) welcome to invest in Peru and strengthen cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, green development and clean energy.” “.
The agreements resulting from the meeting between Boluarte and Xi have materialized in the signing of the Joint Action Plan of the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Peru (2024-2029), as well as the endorsement of multiple bilateral cooperation documents on economy and digital economy, trade, media, science and technology, among others.
