China and North Korea resume freight rail traffic after several months of suspension

Sep. 26 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Chinese authorities confirmed on Monday that rail freight traffic with North Korea has resumed after several months of suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The first trains have already crossed the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, which connects the Chinese city of Dandong with that of Sinuiju, in North Korea. Trains have not passed through the area since April 29, according to information from the Chinese television network CTGTN.

In August, North Korean leader Kim Yong Un declared victory over COVID-19 and announced that the Asian country would lift some restrictions imposed to stop the spread of the virus.

For its part, the South Korean Unification Ministry, in charge of managing inter-Korean affairs, said that both China and North Korea planned to resume rail traffic.
