Chile seeks to carry out a new constituent process

The Palacio de la Moneda became a dialogue table this Monday. After the victory of the rejection in the referendum the day before, the congressmen take on a new role, because with them the president Gabriel Boric must negotiate to achieve the multi-party agreement necessary for a new constituent process.

“We have to continue with that search”

Maintaining the current Constitution has no place, indicated the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Raúl Soto: “It should be noted that there is also a mandate that 80% of Chileans first indicated that they did not want the current Constitution, and therefore So much so that it validates this new process in terms that we must continue with that search for a text that does unite us, that does summon us for the most part”.

“And at the same time the citizens, that same 80%, pointed out that they wanted a democratically and participatively elected body for this purpose, and I think that is something that must be considered, put on the table and respected,” he also stressed.

“They feel cheated”

But the idea of ​​another convention is not as consensual on the right, as Senator Manuel José Ossandón from the National Renewal told RFI: “I think that people don’t want a new convention, they don’t want anything with the conventionalists, they feel absolutely disappointed. That does not mean that there is a convention. This convention can be, for example, with political representatives of Parliament and with experts. Many experts of different political stripes are missing here.”

From the Government it was confirmed that there will be a change of cabinet this Tuesday, September 6.
