June 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of the Pakistani party Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI), Parvez Elahi, has been arrested in the city of Lahore in the framework of an investigation for alleged corruption, within the judicial measures adopted in recent weeks against the former prime Minister Imran Khan and his political formation.
Elahi, a former chief minister of Punjab, has been intercepted near his home. A regional government spokeswoman quoted by Geo News explained that he was fleeing and that she resisted the agents.
The accusations against him derive from accusations for the alleged embezzlement of about 70 million rupees (about 230,000 euros). Last week, he should have appeared before the judge, but the president of the PTI alleged health problems to avoid this summons.
Parvez Elahi has held the presidency of the PTI since March, whose leaders have been the target of repeated political and judicial accusations. The most notorious have as their protagonist Imran Jan, whose arrest this month unleashed a wave of protests that calmed down several days later, when the Supreme Court ordered his release because it considered the arrest “illegal”.
